Debian on HP servers

Tags: none.

Debian isn't "officially" supported by HP, but it works great on HP hardware. Only the HP specific software isn't very easy to install on Debian. This should change now!

Some Debian fans have started a project to port all the Management Agents to Debian:

I hope this is useful to somebody. Helpers are always appreciated, as well as testers.

Are you speaking about HP9000 PA-RISC servers ? Or Intel servers ?

I think he's talking about Intel servers (ex-compaq proliant servers).

Indeed, as anymous stated, it's about about Intel servers, specifically the HP Proliant servers. Works perfect with Debian, too bad there's no 'official' HP support..

Except that they distribute their own version of Debian. And have a service called Debian Linux Support:

Some of the 9k's will actually run Debian, though.

BTW, HP of Venezuela offers new HP SAN solutions (StorageWorks, usw...) with Debian support. This is completely false. They don't do Debian support. Actually, they hardly know what Linux is. Don't lose your time using their support. SAN connects to an HP ProLiant ML370 (in my case) using a fiber channel card. Debian kernels doesn't include support for fiber channel by default: you'll have to recompile a vanilla kernel and include this support. They don't know how to do this, so don't lose your time with them.

There is official support for Debian from HP but currently it's for Sarge, not Etch... but I think it's going to change in future. You can also buy a support pack for Debian.

HP's debian support is a joke

Lenny is NOT supported, except on a very select number of systems- and they tend to be the higher-end boxes. You can't even use components from other ssytems. For example, if you want to configure your P212 controller card, you're SOL; the HP array configuration tool won't recognize the card! They only distribute RPMs, but they won't install with "alien", at least on a 64-bit Lenny install.
