Traditionally telnet was used to connect to different hosts, for performing remote administration and other tasks.
OpenSSH is the more secure alternative now.
It works in a very similar manner to telnet, but all the traffic between your connection and the host at the far side is encrypted.
OpenSSH is five years old and is very mature.
