Debian FTP-master downtime & a new mailing list

Users of Debian's unstable branch, sid, will have noticed that their systems haven't been updated over the previous few days. This is because one of the core Debian machines is unavailable.

This was announced upon the debian-devel-announce mailing list:

ries.debian.org AKA ftp-master.debian.org - hardware problems

you may have noticed that around yesterday evening (UTC) ries.debian.org AKA ftp-master.debian.org has problems. The exact cause and possible solutions for this are currently investigated by the admins, a first problem guess is "troubles with the harddiscs".

ries.debian.org hosts ftp-master, the main copy of the Debian archive. This means that currently no uploads into the archive happen, the testing migration does not run and no mirror push gets send out.

Please be patient, more information will follow when more information is known.

In a wonderful piece of great timing the Debian project has also created a new mailing list for hosting announcements of machine downtime.

The debian-infrastructure-announce list is supposed to covers announcements about changes in the (public and private) Debian infrastructure including services the Debian project directly or indirectly provides.

It is expected that in the future major outages such as the current downtime with ftp-master would continue to be sent to the debian-devel-announce list, but machines which are less critical would go to the new debian-infrastructure-announce list.
