I use cfengine for conf file. Each time a package is update and the conf file is change, cfengine write it again. It's really powerfull. You need a week to have a nice conf and understand, not everything, but enought to manage many computer.

Otherwise, I use cssh (clusterssh) to open an ssh terminal on n computers. Combine with sudo, it's really easy to install a package or reconfigure a package on theses computers, without login with root account !
