It's worth noting that there's rarely any actual need to mess around with runlevels; from doing Debian support on IRC, I know that 99% of occasions where people think they need to play with them, they've got the wrong end of the stick.

Readers may also want to familiarise themselves with the invoke-rc.d and update-rc.d scripts if they are going to manipulate startup scripts.
