If anything I overuse strace. It's often one of the first things I reach for when a program is behaving mysteriously.

Applications which don't seem to be obeying the configfile? I strace to see if they're even looking for it as documented--they usually aren't.

Programs which spit out useless 'permission denied' without specifying what permission failed get an strace pretty much immediately.

I love seeing what that misbehaving program is really doing.
