I would download the tgz-source and compile it. Instead of make_install I would use checkinstall (apt-get install checkinstall) which makes a debian-package and install your compiled package in the debian-system. That is, you can remove it with dpkg -r bla-bla in case you want to update or libraries are update so that you have to recompile.
