Any chance of him getting varifocals? The close field of view through bifocals is usually very narrow, making it impossible to see the whole of a 1280x1024 screen at once - you need to look at either one part or another. Old age caught up with me a while ago and I now wear varifocals. I definitely use the part of the lens that is midway between distant and near to see the whole screen at once.
