If the machine i'm working on has udev, i prefer to use the udev ruleset myself. This has also been discussed on this site in some users' weblogs. In etch, at least the files /etc/udev/persistent-net.rules and /etc/udev/persistent-net-generator.rules have a nice automagic interaction to keep nice stable names for your NICs.
