A tool I can recommend is VirtualBox (virtualbox.org), which is a standard VM-application like VMware, but is dual-licensed under some commercial thingy, and the GPL. It has a nice and easy GUI, and thus offers the best mix between the userfriendly but proprietary VMWare, and the openness of qemu.
