A while back I used pretty much the same method except that I created a user for external support guys and set their "shell" in '/etc/passwd' to "screen".

I turned logging on by connecting to screen session and during the session I could type in the root password for them to "su" to "root" where needed.

Obviously it's arguable how secure the whole thing was but the process was secure enough for what we were after.
