Good article, interesting ideas. I've started using a "temporary user" script myself that generates a user on the fly, with a temporary home directory. It drops me into a shell as the new user, and then removes the user and purges all files when the original shell exits. No X support, though, and it's all just for testing on my machine. It works pretty well for all the simple testing tasks I do. I like your idea of using unionfs to provide a content to the user home dir, though. Very clever.

Ultimately, though, you have to have root access to the machine where you're creating new users. If you have root, though, you should be better able to control where the info on that machine goes anyway. If you don't have root, then you can never really be sure where your info is going, even if the admin of the machine has set-up something like you suggest. No panaceas, unfortunately.
