It is safe, but it won't get updated when the rest of your system does - so I'd suggest you use iceweasel instead.

Basically the Firefox people don't want Debian to use their browser with the changes we make, and call it firefox. So we renamed it. It has some differences between the "real" firefox, but mostly these are minor details. If you don't have a real need for the official browser use the packaged version.

If you do need something that is only in the real release then download it manually - but remember to keep it updated with any security releases which might be made.
