This definitely proves that X is actually working.

So now the question is: what else do you expect? If you want a GNOME desktop, make sure you have gnome-desktop-environment installed.

If you want an Xfce desktop, make sure you have xfce4 installed.

For KDE, install kde. And so on.

Otherwise, if you chose not to use any pre-made desktop enviroments, maybe you just need a window manager (fvwm, icewm, sawfish, metacity...) and a script in /etc/gdm/PostLogin that activates it and spawns a couple of xterms.

If you tell us in which condition you are, we can advice you on how to go on...
