I have never heard of iSCSI or AOE. are those network file systems in the same way that NFS is a network file system, or are they hardware layers?

I agree with drgraefy -- this is a really odd set of choices for the main question posed.

If we're talking networked filesystems, the choices should be something like:

  • NFSv3
  • NFSv4
  • AFS
  • CIFS
  • AFP
  • GFS
  • WebDAV

If instead we're talking about distributed or network-based block devices, Then the choices should be something like:

  • nbd
  • iSCSI
  • drbd
  • AoE
I voted for NFS because i'm using NFSv3, but it doesn't exclude the other ones. I'm using WebDAV, CIFS, and AFP as well.

I'd assume most of the "other one" choices are cifs (Samba)? I'm using NFS to transfer files to my backup server, cifs to pinch mp3s from the Windows users on my home network, and although it's not really a network file system I use scp to transfer files to and from my webserver. Gnome can use ssh as a network file system, and whilst I do have a shortcut to my webserver on my desktop, I prefer scp command-line transfers.

I'm surprised noone mentioned sshfs, it uses FUSE and it's been in debian for quite some time.
I find myself using it all the time except for large file transfers where nothing really beats dd/netcat for speed.

Any knowledge about GlusterFS?

Problems, successes?

Yes, a silly poll. iSCSI and NFS are not mutually exclusive, I, for one, have hosts connecting to a SAN using iSCSI, mounting it using GFS and exporting the GFS volume over NFS. Also it seems to miss very popular (labeit ugly) CIFS protocol.

You are off the edge of the map, mate. Here there be monsters!
