I joined the Hampshire Linux User Group a few years ago on the advice of a friend. He suggested it's easier to get answers to problems from LUG members rather than random strangers on internet forums.

After a while I started to attend the odd meeting. Hampshire have bring-a-box meetings, which is a great way of fixing problems. After a few meetings I started to give the odd presentation, after a few more meetings I somehow ended up as Chairman (next time I must remember to take two steps backwards not just one...)

I think the LUG has proved to be one my most useful resources, both the mailing list and the physical meetings are great. If you have a LUG near by then I'd strongly recommend going along to share!

The closest LUG to me, and the one I'm a member of, is a 9+ hour drive away (on a good day, fine weather, following wind etc.). I used to live a 5 minute walk away, but I'm basically an on-line only member at the moment...

However, I'd still second ajt's comment about joining up to a LUG if you can, and not just because of the beer.

Cheers.

No, but I did attend Linus' first session in the USA at a DC LUG meeting long, long ago, which gave him a standing ovation, much to his embarassment. BTW, my Linux Counter number is 2419 (I think his is 1).

Cool! Is Linus a decent bloke? or was he so mobbed you never actually got to speak to him? I suppose sometime it's a curse being famous, at least most people in the street don't know who he is unlike a TV or film star.

Yeah, he was mobbed, so I listened to his conversations with others and then I booggied. But he was and continues to be a very decent bloke. He's not afraid to share his opinions and back them up with his rationale for holding them. Nor is he afraid to reevalute them and change them them as he deems that to be necessary; e.g., KDE versus GNOME. The world could definitely use a whole lot more folks like him, IMHO.
