Shell is usually BASH or Bourne Again Shell.

Why not? You can do any system administration task in PHP just as well as perl or python. I prefer perl or shell though.

#!/usr/bin/php
<?
system("ls");
?>

I prefer Python. But for 'ls' I rather use Bash, but just for fun, here some Python:

#!/usr/bin/python

import os
print os.system('ls')

Try to archive and set compression level with PHP for example.
PHP has to many memory leak issues.
PHP has segmentation fault problem on a lot of functions.
PHP sucks.
Perl has the biggest package number for system administration tasks.
Perl is the faster script interpretor for regexp operations.

It's not my poll, but I did enable it and I'm interested in the results.

I did expect Shell to dominate but never expected anyone to say PHP. I should have edited the poll before I posted it to add ruby as it's a decent scripting language but no body has suggested it.

I use Perl or shell. Simple stuff with shell anything fancy in Perl.

A melange which suits the need and the moment, and yes sometimesoften that means PHP. Because it works, too, and I spend a lot of time thinking in php so it's faster to throw it down.
