I checked *Long-time user* for my 18 months, but I'm a newcomer when stymied.

First installed 1/1997, after six months or so of Slackware. I was debating whether to reinstall Slackware or go for Red Hat. This was a frequent question on newsgroups at the time, and one commentor said "Why not Debian? It's better than both." That's what I did, and I've installed it dozens of times since. It's basically all I use.
