I have logwatch on my sarge box which analyses my log files and sends me daily an email.

./sabin -s

Ditto.

I find it very useful for spotting things that aren't supposed to happen.

(Although it might be better to use something that runs more than once a day, such as logcheck, if you're very paranoid.)

I have the logs "looked at" and a report emailed to me daily, which I do eyeball. I also look at the logs manually now and then.

However it's fair to say that I don't carefully look at them every day.

I use root-tail for the logs on my home box. It can be especially useful if you use workspaces and don't watch one all the time, because it draws the logs to the root window (like the name says), and you don't have to watch some window.

That sounds good - but I'd guess that if you have a few windows open you'd be unable to see all the messages ..?

That's correct. But, I normally have a small space in the right-down corner of the screen, and that's where root-tail is configured to display the logs. And because I usually keep just one maximized window per workspace, it is easy to just minimize/move it out of the way.

Besides, sometimes, not seeing the logs helps from getting distracted when doing some stuff which require you to "be there". i.e. homework :-)

I have been running logcheck for some time now, seems to work quite good. It takes a little effort to set up, but it was a good learning experience (using regexp for the filters).
