I must admit, that after a shameless complaint e-mail to Steve, I understand the reason as to why the design had to be changed, and I accept it.

It would be nice though to have the old color scheme, and font groups implemented into the new theme.

I liked the red more then the blue :)

Keep up the wonderful work Steve.

I take this opportunity to publicly thank you for the effort and investment you have put into this site - A great donation to the community - I for one can't begin the describe the amount of knowledge this site has gave me.

Thank you.

Cheers,
Maxim Vexler.

Thanks.

Still if anybody does send me/post a link to an alternative stylesheet I will happily add it, and allow users to select what they prefer.

(If required I'll add more divs/ids to the templates to make use of different features too, but that might take a while).

I've been making changes as per emails/comments have come in although I'm a bit busy right now so some things are still pending.

I'm going to take a few days off to visit Exeter from tomorrow which is unfortunately badly timed. Still the chance to see grown men running down streets carrying barrels of flaming fire is too good to pass up ;)

Its not so hard on my eyes like the red, and when I read manuals I usually do it for a while, so stick with some kind of white design!

The new style just feels too bright. Maybe tone down the white background just a tad?

truly. It looks quite klunky and not near as slick. New design is ugly. Looks much less professional. Looks like a 'fan site' off of myspace.com or blogger. Bring back the old design!

Myes I feel the same, but a stylesheet could do wonders... I am just a little curious which engine is used :).

I made one with white text on a black background which can be viewed here. The stylesheet is here.
Steve, if you want me to take that down, then just say so.

That looks very dark!

I've no objection to you keeping it there, would you like to submit it for users here to choose from?

What about having multiple sytle sheets available? I know it's more work, but it's probably the only way to satisfy everyone. I would also prefer it darker. The style sheets could differ only in color scheme, for instance, since I think most people probably like the new layout.

As I said above I will allow this if somebody actually submits a complete stylesheet with an alternative design.

So far that has not happened, and I am personally happy with the current setup - so I will not create an alternate one.

Steve, do you have a way to have multiple style sheets and then make them persistent for users on different visits? Using browser methods like View > Use Style> [stylesheet] are only valid "per page" and even a reload gets back to default style. Probably need something in the cookie to store the style.

I guess I have to make the change before anybody contributes a sheet then? *Ugh*

OK changes live now - if you look in your "Options" setting in the menu you should see a space for entering a URL. If you fill that out it will be used as a persistant stylesheet.

Let me know if it doesn't work 100% it has had only minimal testing.

I like the design for the front pages, but I find the side bars annoying when reading the articles. When you are reading the article the content is squished in the middle and the side bars are empty. If the article content spread accross the full width of the page that would help reading (especially the long commands ;)

Cheers!

I like the new design... IMO it's much friendlier, though I noticed the logo isn't transparent when you brows the website with IE. Since people still use this crap of browser it would actually be nice to fix that.. but well.. perhaps it's reason enough to get rid of IE.

I created the logo using Inkscape and exported it as png. I haven't been able to find a way to create a gif image with transparency on my debian box. And assuming that most of the visitors for d-a.org would be debian/linux users, I don't think they will be using IE to view it ;)

But still if the logo can be made to look transparent in IE too, it would be a good thing. Atleast the logo rendering would be consistent in all browsers.

Not to be too much of a bitch, but I find it rather disappointing to find explicit references to M$-distributed fonts in your style sheet. 'Verdana' and 'Arial' are not only typographic abominations -- they're also the product of a greedy corporation, and remain NON-FREE even if they can be installed on a GNU/Linux system.

For more on why Arial is evil, check out http://www.ms-studio.com/articles.html.

If you want we can add Helvetica too. But if you are familiar with the concept of web design and CSS you should know that the font-family declaration only plays a role of a hint rather than complete order. What fonts are displayed in the client depends on which ones are installed on the user's system. As a user you can always overide a website's style sheet and use your own.

All the font-family declarations in the style sheet use the generic font family e.g. sans-serif or serif, so that in case the user's system does not have any of the listed fonts it should fall back on the defaults for the generic family.

Ugly. I liked the old site design better. Also, the column on the right seems to be pointless, you could easily move the searchbox to the area right above 'system administration tips and resources' in the titlebar, and move the user specific stuff to the left sidebar. IMO it would make the site look alot better.

I, like the masses, also like the new layout... well, mostly. The one thing that I would suggest changing is the white background. While it gives a very clean look and feel to the site, after a while of reading it tends to be hard on the eyes. Of course I can always turn the brightness down on my monitor if it starts to bug me too much.

The source is nice :) Get rid of that last table in there, tables are evil !

Using custom stylesheets is a great idea. But why do I have to register in order to choose a custom stylesheet ?

the current css gets some fonts mixed up. I see times, arial, helvetica, and a few bold variaties in every page. A bit messy. the times is particularly tiring on the eyes. and I'm not particularly fond of the red-white-lightblue .. it reminds me of toothpaste. Probably personal. Could someone post some previews of what the site can look like with different css ?

Something happened between preview and final posting. There seems to be a white space character between 97 and 21. Trying again: screenshot
