Well - depends on the machine :)

My laptop and home workstation (sid) - somewhere between daily and weekly.

My web server (sarge) - whenever a security fix that affects it is issued.

Couple of other boxes (file server etc) - whenever I remember :)

I have one main server (sarge) and I hit apt-get update/upgrade every day when I check my logs (daily logwatch reports, snort reports etc.)

./sabin -s

Sarge based servers gets updated when new updates are available, i usually check once a week, must setup cron-apt to do that for me :)

for desktop etch/sid i usually check every couple of days. Couple of days ago i dist-upgraded to sid and everything worked! (so far)

Servers use a cron job for finding out if there are updates. Then run them manually. My laptop and home machine are both stable and get updated when I remember or for security. The work maching is SID and gets updates when ever I want to play with something new.

Kind of backwards that work machine SID thing, but hasn't bit me to hard yet. Actually I use XFCE now because a couple times KDE went bust. I just couldn't get into Gnome(though that is what I used for the first couple years). Its just that I don't want to do "work" at home. :-)

Internal only webserver - internal to the enterprise - I cannot get out with apt, so it's update by hand when a major update catches my eye.

Edge machines - daily via cron. Fileservers, weekly via cron. Most of the machines are fairly sparse on the software - not a ton of cruft installed. So, it's not that bad.

Mostly when a new stable release comes out.

Apart from I've not updated my box from woody to sarge yet, am worried that it will break things. lol

I do not upgrade the whole machine at any given time. I have a list of my favorite packages set up (maxima, texmacs, gfortran, fftw, octave etc.,) and I just upgrade them when the new versions are out.
