I run Sarge on one machine which uses X (a laptop) and I really don't see the point of running with a backport.
Whilst it is true that there are newer drivers, and all the composite/transparency stuff is being developed for X.org the X11 code still works just fine for me.
Upgrading for no particular reason is pretty much against the idea of Debian Stable - so I've kept it as-is.
I'd be curious to know what would make anybody upgrade to a backport ..? (Other than better hardware support, I guess that would be understandable.)

If I recall correctly, wasn't xorg to be added to Sarge sometime around Nov/Dec of '05?
I've been checking Debian Weekly News but not a word on xorg lately.

I don't see any real difference with the old install, so I'll look into X.org again when etch is nearing stable phase.
To comment on the third option: X is nice, gives you more room for terminals ;)
Just see it as a really big fb console with support for multi terms on one monitor.

yes, I can tell you why using X. it does have some nice desktop features over getty. and it usualy doesn't slow down my servers as I usualy don't install it on servers, I only use X server on desktop.
however, you can find some X clients on my server machine - nice example is ethereal. its great to have graphical sniffer on my desk knowing it runs on 4way computer 250km far away. I think it doesn't slow down my server...

But there are ppl out there (like me) that use Debian on their desktops as well.
I only use it to create some more space for xterms and firefox. But that's just me.
I agree that running X on your server is not advisable, since it comes with a lot of libraries, executables and a real big fat server. So you will have to take this into account when securing the box.
For a workstation it has some use tho.
links2 does a great job when it comes to web browsing, but it lacks css2 and most of javascript, so most web2.0 stuff won't show up. Running firefox or konquerer (or whatever modern browser) is the only sollution for this. Hence the X setup.

I don't do X on my dozen or so Sarge servers.
For my current Laptop, I use Ubuntu.
