thunderbird, mozilla-suite, firefox, liferea, psi: that's 5 incompressible
i often got at least one gnome-terminal at user with many tabs (for ssh) and one logged at root : that's 2 windows more
if i had a soulseek client, amaroK, synaptic : i finally got nearly 10...

I was just about to walk away for the night, so I only have Firefox and Thunderbird open...

Normally I have multiple tabs open on Firefox/Konqueror or Opera, and Konsole in tabbed mode. I don't normally run with that many other applications/windows open though.

I hate applictions like GIMP that open up a billion windows that just don't behave as on cohesive unit. I know the old MS Windows MDI is normally hated, but in some circumstances it is a better interface...

i usually have 3 on my first workspace and thats pretty much about it.
i am horrible at managing windows with workspaces thats why i cant wait for Xgl and compiz to hit unstable.. although i wont use it because i am an openbox user (will have to wait for those guys to add that "scale" feature soon)

firefox: with few tabs
xterm: running screen with around 12 regions and usually splitted into 3
xterm: no screen on this one because i ssh to remote servers then re-attatch to a screen session there. (=

Like many other's who've commented, I've only got a few windows open, but each one is loaded -- 20+ tabs in Firefox, multiple mail accounts, 3 tabs in Konsole (one if which is a split screen session), putty with a triple split screen session (to a FreeBSD box).

Plus, does VNC count as one window?

Going back to Firefox though. The one thing I miss from using Opera, is that when I have loads of tabs open, the didn't just disappear off the edge of the screen, is there an extension that will give me a scrolling tab strip?

Also, when did Mozilla stop doing an "installer" for Firefox? I've decided to go outside the repository and download straight from Mozilla, but nowadays they only seem to do an "extract and run in place" tarball... Annoying, so I think I'll go take a look at backports instead...

Laters!

I always keep a shell window open for doing quick tasks without the GUI overload.
When working on different terminals in parallel, the screen utility is usefull to avoid cluttering the taskbar.
