$5? You've been ripped off -- for the last 2+ years I've been wearing a pair of Bata flip-flops that I bought in Kenya for 40Ksh ~= 54c a pair, and they're still going strong. I bought two pairs at the time, thinking they wouldn't last, and the other pair is just gathering dust...

Must say though that I only where them when I go out (or to the server room which has wicked A/C and cold floor), preferring to spend most of my time barefoot ;-)

I am a thong man. Got them for $2.30AUD so I think that is about $0.10USD. National clothing here anyway, at least for the lover classes.

I'm about the same, having been a boot wearer for many years (~17 or there abouts). But these days, living in SA, I find myself mostly going barefoot, but if I'm out-and-about I always wear something, even if it is just to steer clear of the random broken glass that's everywhere. If not barefoot though, I'm either in may faithful flip-flops, or when the weather turns (or I'm wearing trousers rather than the usual shorts) I'm usually in my even more faithful 10 hole DM Stealies. Just to round things off, I do have a couple of pairs of shoes, but they're just for weddings or interviews. I also have bike boots (x2), walking boots (x2), climbing boots (x3), ice-climbing boots (+crampons), diving boots, and a pair of wellies (somewhere) -- so if it's down to pure numbers, rather than time-spent in each, I'm a boot man all the way ;-) Cheers.

Now that it is warm in Oklahoma, a.k.a. 'Native America', I wear moccasins. The cold weather boots have been put up but I still have my mud boots handy as we are finally getting normal rain after over a year's drought. 'Normal' rain is around 42 inches, 106.7 centimeters, a year. My firefighting bunker boots and work boots have been retired for 8 years and I wear my 'Western' boots about once a month, which is all my feet can stand.

I don't leave the house without my big imitation-doc-marten boots. Then when I get home, I do the Mr Rogers thing and change into my house slippers and cardigan. Sometimes I even sing "it's a beautiful day in the neighborhood" while I change.

We need a new category. "Strangest Linux-related poll ever". Maybe tags too? I suggest: "footwear" and "barefeet".

I dunno. I feel slightly saddened that shoes and trainers (of all things) have beaten out boots (and to a lesser degree sandles), but seeing as I wear both boots and sandles, I rekon that I'm sitting pretty in second place with 26% (combined 13%+13% ;-)

Or am I just fooling myself?

Gotta say though, it's not the what I'd usually expect for a poll on a linux admin site...

Gotta say though, it's not the what I'd usually expect for a poll on a linux admin site...

It has certainly been interesting to see people submitting polls on random, but related, topics. Such as beards!

I've noticed a lot of local sysadmins wearing army boots, or other big boots. And figured it was an interesting thing to poll about having just bought my first pair of shoes in about 12 years.

(I usually wear boots; the bigger the better!)

No doubt -- my good ol' 10 hole DM stealies are the best, and so damn comfy after a few years wear.

Why stealies? Well, they've saved my toes from one work-related-accident. About 8 years ago I was trying to fix a SCSI problem in one of the servers I was given charge of, and stupidly, removed the mounting screws on a recently new 18GB SCSI drive, before I had detached the molex power cable. You know how tight those buggers can be sometimes, and well, while working the thing off, it suddenly popped out, sending the drive shooting out the front of the chassis, and you guessed it, down onto my steal clad toe.

Dead silence.

I glance up at the other admin working nearby, and without saying a word, I he picks it up, hands it to me, and hurridly gets back to his own work. I do what I wanted to with the LUN jumpers, stick it back in, plug it all together, and then we both sat there and held our breaths while it booted back up, all fine and dandy.

I just rang the guy to check, and the server is still going strong, with the same drive humming along. Never had a hitch.

So the moral of the story -- if you're doing server maintenance, where safety boots!

Laters...

Steve, what would be an interesting poll would be to see how many of your readers are employed in sysadmin positions.

I for one would like to see if I am the only one who is reading this site out of sheer interest as it has absolute nothing to do with my day job.

So you use Debian when you're not at work? Surely that's not strange at all.

It is probably not a bad idea to repeat the old poll now that polls have more readers, and comments associated with them.

If you create a poll I'll happily post it.

Boots! My current favorite is a pair of Red Wings, heavily greased waterproof steel toed monstrosities that will tromp through anything while keeping my feet nicely protected and supported.

I quit driving a few years ago, so I walk everywhere in this dinky little town in the boonies with no public transportation of any kind, not even a taxi. I'd be in a bad way without my boots. And if I ever again encounter an old IBM 360 that needs a good swift kick, I'll be prepared to cave in the panel!

Cool follow-up question, since we're into sysadmin fashion: How long is your hair? I sometimes feel like the last of the ponytails, but would love to find out that I'm not the last of the breed.

I shave my head every couple of weeks meaning I have either no facial/head hair at all - or just a small amount of regrowth.

I get lazier in the winter, when it is cold and snowing, but usually no hair at all.

Red Wings! I have a pair of them I bough when I lived in the US. The best pair of footwear I ever bought. I've had them about 10 years and they are the only items of footwear that I regularly wear that have lasted longer than 18 months. They don't look pretty any more but I don't care as they are comfortable and keep my feet safe and dry.

These days I mostly wear shoes or hybrid multi-activity trainers/walking boots. My current pair of Hi Tec's will have lasted just over 18 months when the go in the bin this autumn.

I work in Miami and only wear clothing or shoes when I leave the house on weekends ... the rest of the time these items are not needed when doing web related work.
