If you're curious about what RMS would say you can use the Virtual RMS package:

My (new!) main machine:

skx@desktop:~$ vrms
              Non-free packages installed on desktop

nvidia-glx NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x driver
  Reason: Proprietary license
nvidia-kernel-2.6.16-2-k7 NVIDIA binary kernel module for Linux 2.6.16-2-k7
nvidia-kernel-source NVIDIA binary kernel module source

  3 non-free packages, 0.3% of 1003 installed packages.

My old desktop machine itchy.my.flat shows exactly the same, although the laptop I got given for work also includes ndiswrapper.

Lots of stuff:

nVidia driver
Maromedia Flash player
Java virtual machine
Mplayer
Lame
libdvdcss
Acrobat reader
Real player
dvdrtools
POV-Ray

And also some games. Oh, and a Windows partition I rarely use.

Btw, vrms is a bit hard to qualify non-free softwares: Mplayer, Lame and libdvdcss are all Free (in both the sense of FSF and OSDL). The only glitches are that the concept they implement are subject to patents in USA (but not in EU, where software patents doesn't apply).

Not a lot really.

I do have mplayer and libdvdcss, not that I use them much.

Java is installed, and again not used much - though that should now be Debian approved.

I have RealPlayer and Opera. Real Player is pretty rubbish, but at least it sort of works and I can see stuff with it. Opera is a pretty nice even though it's closed, and I do use it for web site testing now and then.

My biggest gripe though is the Nvidia binary stuff. The worst thing with it, is that it's such a pain to fiddle with every time the kernel, xorg or Nvidia upgrades in Etch I have to mess manually with it all, and it's not a reliable thing to do.

xp on seperate drive here, love my games (hate directx).

non free things in lin would inlude opera but its not free in the same sense, free to download + install thou. Other things would be codecs for mp3 / dvd playback which really is a necessity.

"No non-free packages installed on derek! rms would be proud."

Some of the packages are not in Debians US repository, but they are free software if encumbered in the US by software patents (whatever they are -- weird idea, patenting numbers).

The main annoyance I have is people who embed perfectly accessible to free software movies inside recent flash formats.

Lack of support for recent flash versions.

BBC multimedia content seems inaccessible as well via free software, or did I miss something?

Free Javas run most Java stuff I try, including Eclipse, but I seem to be able to live without Java except for OpenOffice wizards.

If you are running a java application server, you most often run a nonfree JVM.

I voted lame/mplayer/libdvdcss and java, even though I've been using Opera since around version 6 as my primary browser. It's nice to see Firefox catching up, but I still prefer Opera as it's snappier on similar hardware.

But in my opinion Opera is much better software than realplayer on many levels; everything from better packaging, better quality, not to mention Opera is on the whole a cool'n'happy'go'lucky kind of develping house, at least compared to Real Networks.

If realnetworks released a free (as in beer) codec that vlc could easily use, I'd probably use it more, as it is, I view it as slighty more evil than quicktime .mov-files/streams ;-)

I agree Opera and realplayer should be in different categories. Opera since 2.12 until 7 was my first choice browser but then I knew Firefox also had mouse gestures and saved session history, and crashed less often. It IS slower, but is the best and more flexible.

I voted "my other partition contains Windows" because it's true, but I don't have ANYTHING useful there, just games that refuse to run in Sarge (Battlefield 2, Need for Speed MW, C&C Generals). I'm moving 100% to Linux but games other than UT2004 that run natively in Linux keep my machine Windows infected.
