I use masqmail, that silently keeps a queue of outgoing messages until I go online.

I run servers with postfix, exim or qmail

Since then I have seen the few articles here and on another few sites about email setup, so next time I maybe go with exim4 or postfix.

For reference, here is sendmail, courier, cyrus-common and qmail-src. Note that qmail has to be compiled and qmail-src might not be used so often... so check upgrades (the "recent" filed). Also, many qmail-lovers will download vanilla qmail and patch it themselves.

This poll doesn't have enough votes to be significant ...
But the explaination is that the choice for exim was made a long time ago when the choices were fewer.
Since then the choice to upgrade from exim3 to exim4 was much easier to make than to change to something else. Especially when people get very vocal on the subject.
Changing the default server would take a very good rationale - especially when Debian handles the installation of replacement packages so easily.

No, I use exim4 ;)

http://people.debian.org/~igloo/popcon-graphs/index.php?packages= exim4
to the graph for postfix, you'll see that exim clearly beats postfix, even if you only take the "vote" disply into consideration. Seeing as exim4 is the current package version, it's a more representative comparison...
Cheers.

Why wasn't "exim" called "exim3", and why is bind version 8 just called "bind" whereas I have to specify "bind9" if I want the more recent major version??
I guess that the repository will always be in a state of flux, somewhat, so these kinds of things can be put down to teething problems that are still be worked out ;-)
Cheers.
