If someone was interested in buying me a SAN, DAS or AoE hardware, i would gladly switch to a SAN. But I'm currently using linux cause we can't afford anything any fancy. Anyone interested in donating to a student run organization?

Linux distributions like FreeNAS (http://www.freenas.org) and OpenFiler (http://sourceforge.net/projects/openfiler/) must make it affordable to set up cost-effective NAS.

FreeNAS is FreeBSD based, not Linux based.

Unfortunately Debian does not work too well with most modern SAN deployments. Don't get me wrong - it does work, but you do not have all the features always (depending on the technology you use).

I voted Internal drives, as we only use the SAN for backups on our Debian systems. The RedHat systems however has production mount points on the SAN as SAN support is much better.

Just my 2c.

Cheers

Good synchronisation for this pool, as I am currently looking for the different technologies we can use with Linux to provide block device level network storage, as we can't afford a SAN.

For the moment, i have found GNBD and DRBD, and AoE.
But i would like also to share this storage with Windows servers at block device, but it seems that there is no possibility, (no existing drivers for this OS).

So, except for the problem of Windows, anyone got some good experiences with these technologies, does it work well? Is it reliable?

ps : it seems that OpenFiler provide iSCSI support, so i could normally share my storage (DAS) with Windows OS, am i right?

Well, I voted DAS, and not just because I like to root for the underdog ;-)

We have a mix if internal drives (which I sort of DAS if you squit at the definition), and some external library racks. However, we're in the process of organising some SAN hardware testing and will likely be recieving hardware from a few sources within the next few weeks -- anyone got any favourites/experiences to share and offer while I get ready to think about storage designs?

Also, could anyone offer and idea as to how good the EMC linux solutions are?

Cheers.

We use all apart from AoE. All servers have at least 2 disks RAID1 to boot. We use SAN for virtual machines and file/email/database storage, and NAS in some departments for file services.
