I'm running Etch on my desktop, but I plan to upgrade my server and otherdesktop systems to Etch within the first month. Depending on when it comes out will determin if how quickly I do the upgrade, I need some free time to do all the messing about.

However I'm using qemu to test the upgrade at the moment, the result of how easy that is will determin how keen I am to upgrade well running systems.

Well - technically the question was for people who will upgrade after etch replaces sarge as stable - so if you're already running it then you're running testing :)

I suppose I could have made the question more specific - but - there's only so much screen space for polls.

Myself - I have three sarge and two sid installs - sarge for servers, sid for testing and my own desktop. I will probably update the least important server within two weeks, then the others within the first month.

Since it hasn't been released you can't be!

(More seriously you're essentially running a testing/pre-release version of etch...)

I am already running it too. I installed a server a few weeks ago, and decided it was not worth to install sarge when etch is around the corner. I figured the upgrade hassle would be too much to be worth it.

We are running sarge on about 40+ servers.

I have etch on my laptop since a month, and the new servers will go production in one ASAP. This means about 10 physical machines. Virtual machine remain in sarge for a while.

This is mainly becose we badly need some features not easily in sarge (f.e. multipath 0.4.7, xen 3.0).

I won't be upgrading to etch, since I have no idea how long it will be around for.
Woody was around forever. Sarge seems to have a short life.
Is there a published lifetime for Etch?

A given Debian stable is stable and supported only until the next version becomes stable. The old stable version may be supported for a short while after. As Debian isn't a company selling support, there are no warranties.

Woody was stable forever because Sarge took too long. The plan for Sarge is for it to be stable for around 18 months, and then be replaced by Etch. Once Etch is out Sarge will be maintained for as long as volunteers can maintain it, say 6-12 months.

HTH.

The security team intends to support each release until one year after the release of its successor.

So assuming that Etch is released upon January 1st 2007 then Sarge will remain supported until January 1st 2008.

Well I've already blogged about my testing of the upgrade to "testing".

I want to upgrade ASAP for servers.

We currently run Sarge with DotDeb updates of PHP, MySQL, and it would be desirable to move to stable versions of these (although Gui at detdeb has been superb), and to get new versions of Postfix installed.

I'm a bit disappointed at version of bind9 in Etch, as there are some improvements upstream, but I guess if I cared enough I'd have done something about it.

The main motivation here, is to keep the focus of the security team (they can only do so much, so quickly, I'm guessing stable trumps old stable in terms of priorities), and to pick up less critical bug fixes long overdue. I also don't want to leave my successor a load of boxes running some long dead versions of Debian, like the Redhat (6 and 7) I inherited, some of which already had serious security issues.

We still have one old Redhat box to replace....

As a consulting firm, for clients we currently use Debian Sarge and Ubuntu 6.06 for production work. Debian vs. Ubuntu usually depends on freshness of packages needed and desktop environment (unified Ubuntu if running on desktops). Ubuntu's 5 year LTS commitment is also factored.

I can't wait for Etch to come out. The disk crypto features and xen integration look great. I also hope 2.6.18 makes it in.

I will probably wait 1-3 months before I add it to my list of production distro's, replacing Sarge. We have developers currently using it on the desktop, and we will be heavily testing it during that 1-3 month period.

This poll is in right place in right time. My day today: sources.list: stable => etch, apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade.

Yours sincerely Peter Kotrcka

Good luck!

Plese report back what happens? My QEMU simulated upgrades from Sarge to Etch seemed to go okay, I've yet to do the upgrade for real though.

Minus a couple of months...

Means: I'm running Etch on all but one system for some months now...

I installed Ubuntu dapper on a brand new amd64 machine because of the lack of sata-drivers on sarge. I'll switch back to debian immediatly after release; ther stability of debian is by far not reached in Ubuntu, even in dapper LTS.

should have been an option for already running Etch.

So to answer the question - minus several months.
