Where did apt-setup go?

Anyone know where that program went?

I was helping a friend with a debian install over the phone and after giving him my sources.list file he asked me where he'd find new ones. Well, apt-get.org was mentioned, but what he wanted to know was how to reconfigure his sources.list file with the standard debian listings since his cd install only left him with repositories on the cd (he didn't want to hit the network during his install so he didn't choose anything else)

Anyway, I remembered that you could type a command (which I believe was apt-setup) to get back to that screen during the installation where you chose from a list

anyway, apt-setup appears to be gone, and looking around online I found this discussion http://www.debianhelp.org/node/3756 but that didn't end conclusively.

I don't really need this, as I edit my sources.list by hand, it's just nagging at me

If you re-run base-config, then setup of apt is part of that.

I would not have remembered, but I did a fresh sarge install today. If you choose ftp or http, and then a country, it makes the appropriate entries in sources.list.

But only for Sarge ..

If you look at http://packages.debian.org, and search for packages which contain "apt-setup" you'll see it is no longer included in sid/etch

is apt-get.org the best place to for sources for someone new to debian? i would think so...but i found all mine searching around the debian sites and newsgroup postings, i didn't know about apt-get.org a few years ago (if it was even there)

I'd say no.

Adding new sources without good reason is a simple way to get your packages messed up.

If you're running stable and you need a newer package that isn't available it is a good solution - but if you don't need something like that then using external, untrusted, sources isn't something I'd recommend.

You might want to try netselect-apt, which is still in etch, and appears to be healthily maintained.
