Weblog entry #11 for Grimnar

Exim4 SMTP (?)

Okay. The tradition goes on, new week = new entry.

This time I need some basic help with exim4 (I guess).
My mailserver is working quite good with vexim, but I never got the SMTP to work.

Alas, when I set up mail account for users I need to use the ISP in outgoing mail
as opposed to the domain the user is getting mail from.

detailed:

mail in: user@realdomain.tld
mail out: mail.isp.tld

Should be:
mail in: user@realdomain.tld
mail out: user@realdomain.tld

I hope this is very simply a exim4.conf fix, but its been months since I tinkered with those files. And this keeps me from trying out stuff, since I'm afraid of breaking the mail server:D

-Andreas.

Okei.

What you are looking to implement is SMTP Auth. SMTP is currently
working as it is what allows mail in to mail.mydomain.tld.

This is what I found out at a different maillinglist today.
So then I ventured to exim.org and found out absolutely nothing! Its not readable for human kind.

SMTP auth for exim4. Anyone experts on this field?

(yeah, I found something on this website of course, but I recon it dont "fit" my setup.)

See /usr/share/doc/exim4-base/README.Debian.gz and /etc/exim4/conf.d/auth/30_exim4-config_examples for SMTP-AUTH staff

hopefully 30_exim4-config_examples is more readable than the homepage stuff:)
IE, easier to figure out for idiots like me:)

And no, im not really interested in involving mye ISP in anything, or other peoples ISP, it's way better to use the domain people actually paid for. Looks nicer:)

You should put realdomain.tld to /etc/mailname and use mail.isp.tld as smarthost in your exim configuration. I assert this is easiest but not only way to get what you need, if I quite catch you, of course :)

Okay, now I'm abit stressed out. The domain transfers is due in 1-2 days, and I did NOT understand anything in the README or the other stuff. And I thought I had a couple of weeks to make it work before the transfer.
