Weblog entry #12 for Grimnar

Torrent trafic priority

Okay, I just searched around and found some answers, but that was for a different linux distro.
The thing is, like many other people they have a torrent client running 24/7 and alas browsing the web is like a timetravel back to the 90's.

So my quest this week is to find a solution to make torrent trafic rest aside when other users are using the net. Is this possible? And when the line is not occupied with other trafic, the torrent speeds up again.

My GF is really going crazy these days, she does not understand why im seeding distros. :)

Oh well, let the fun begin.

Have a look at http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/77
Maybe that article gives some hints.

There are many traffic shapers ( as pointed out in the link by alfadir ) but I still would recommend a careful study of Linux advanced routing and traffic control and manually shaping the traffic with iproute2. It's really one impressive firewall :)

You could use the bt console client, it can limit upload speed

btlaunchmanycurses --max_upload_rate 200

will limit the upload to 200kb/s

Well, limiting upload/download speed is one way, but a clever traffic shaping is able to practically retain those speeds while simultanously allowing for low ping times/ responsive ssh sessions / quick browsing.

Quite often I see that it's not bandwidth that is problematic here, but it's the number of parallel connections. Upwards of 600 per single Torrent client user. It strains some equipment I'm in charge of so I'm implementing Netfilter iplimit/connlimit specifically for the BitTorrent protocol.

Thanks all for the help. Been trying different solutions but none seems to really work for me. Not saying that nothing works, its probably more my fault then any.
