Server acting up again - slow speeds!

Just having a strange problem. This week I have to reboot my server once a day to
get my normal speeds. I transfer a lot of images from my laptop to my server. This usually goes with the speed of about 3000kbs (wireless). But hours after reboot this goes down to 30 kbs. What the hell? Both samba and proftpd gives me these speeds. What can cause this problems?

Slow servers are caused by too many processes, too much memory usage, or hardware failure. Have a look at top to see what's running and what's using up memory, have a look at uptime to see resource usage over time, and take a look at this page for more debugging tips.

Apache, mysql, gdm, x11, several small apps - all stopped. The results: 30kbs.

 Note, this is only a home server not doing that much. Mainly keeping my photos in shape.

Eh, what's going on? When quoting the above messsage the bbcode looked good. Even when I checked the code before confirming it was ok. But it's not good when posted? STEVE?!:)

And if you click the "Reply to this comment" link for that comment, it also looks correct on the "Add Comment" page. Although each line has a lot of spaces at the end, making my browser window scroll horizontally.

Lines of long non-broken comments are broken up every 45 characters or so to prevent page-widening attacks.

I don't know what you entered but the lines like "xxx&nbsp;&nbsp;" have no space in them so they trigger it.

I'd suggest using "pre", "code", etc, in HTML mode if you want things to look fancy. I'm not sure how BBCode works for those kind of things. If it just adds &nbsp; you're going to get into trouble.

I'll update the code so that the preview behaves the same way to at least make the problem apparent prior to you commiting your text. Thats as much as I can/will do while I'm so busy.

Anyways, just rebooted the server, the same processes in on and I get very good speeds. 3500KB/s.

Another thing. I've been running this: deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main non-free contrib deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main non-free contrib deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch main Now since Etch has been released should I change this into something else? I still want to run testing.

if you want testing, use testing instead of etch everywhere

Yeah, upgraded to Lenny, but still having troubles with the speed. Works perfectly after reboot. Few hours later it all sucks. Stopped several programs but nothing changes.

Still no solution to this... I can download from the server at normal fast speed, but the speed drops when trying to upload. grr!
