Weblog entry #114 for Steve
I spent a good few hours last night reworking my personal website, now it is all modern and CSS-based.
Previously it was mostly CSS but the colours and layout weren't so good.
I managed to rework the design, and update things, fairly easily. Using Apache's mod_include for some stuff is quite nice, although I'm aware that it will slow down page requests.
One thing that came up at the same time was a comment from a friend about advertising. He wants to see me allow users to advertise here.
On the one hand I think there are probably many free-software authors who would love to have their project promoted - but on the other hand I'm not a great fan of adverts in the first place.
I have a few here, and more elsewhere, to basically cover costs.
I kinda like the way that Kuro5hin.org allows users to submit adverts and I could almost see that working.
However I'd have to make sure that adverts were a) free, and b) relevant.
Would there be any users wishing to promote their Debian-friendly packages/software/websites?
One of the suggested bonuses was that if there really were user-submitted adverts, which weren't actually revenue generators it would feel nicer to the community members who are basically against the adverts we currently have which mostly ends up in my pockets to pay for time/work, etc.
Adding the infrastructure should be pretty simple..
Oh well, back to work.
