Weblog entry #115 for Steve

"Community Adverts"

Community adverts are now present.

What are they?

Well they are adverts submitted by members of this community! They allow you to advertise/promote/pimp/whore out your own personal Debian-project. Whether it is a site that contains good content, or a project of interest to Debian users you can now get visitors here to view it!

Simply head over to this advert creation page and play around with it.

Comments, feedback, or complaints welcome.

If you post an advert which I accept you will be able to track how many times it has been displayed, and how often it has been clicked upon.

Currently :

  • Community adverts are shown 10% of the time instead of Google's Adsense adverts.
  • Community adverts are free.
  • Adverts must be text only (to be honest this is utterly unlikely to change)
  • I reserve the right to truncate, edit, or refuse adverts
    • You have about 200 words tops, but "less is more"
  • Links in advert text will be denied.

I almost allowed adverts to creep into weblog entries in addition to just the articles - but to be honest I can see people being unhappy with that. I like the fact that this site only has a couple of links on the article pages, since that is what most people come for. More are just annoying/redundant.

I also love the fact that you can enable/disable the display of adverts yourself via the preference editor - so if you want to disable them feel free. If you don't like adverts chances are you'll not click on them, so why annoy you?

Why do this?

Well donations are nice, and Googles Adsense program is nice too - but this site represents a community. The only reason so many visitors come here is because of the contribution of thousands of readers, article posters and comment writers.

So why not give them a voice? Why not let them promote their sites too?

It isn't about the money, its about giving back. Giving back to people who helped you. People who help make Debian GNU/Linux the universal operating system.

/me takes hat off of respect for you giving the community this opportunity.

Honestly, I lack words for it, as I'm impressed - so I'll just create a shameless add instead!

Thanks :)

There are still a few more things to come which will be visible soon. One thing which is visible now is the global display:
