Weblog entry #186 for Steve

New site search ..

I've installed a new search engine upon this site.

I'd be interested in peoples comments, go here to test it out.

Specifically I'm wondering if this is a better way forward than the site search which is currently present. So far the site search is extremely minimal and doesn't allow you to search comments, for example.

The new system uses a local spider and so should catch comments. But it isn't complete so I don't know how well it will work..

Feedback welcome.

nice, I love your site :)

two things:
- exclude /feed in your search
- it would be nice, if you can strip (or interpret) HTML-tags from (in) the results

I've done the first, but I'n not sure about the second.

I'll have a look around to see if it is easy/possible.

Hum, first search "xen"... one result only :(
Is it suppose to search also in blog comments or not?

"Search for xen. Search results: xen : 954."

Looks like it was not done indexing when you tried :)

As the comment suggested the indexing wasn't yet complete. It should be done now.

just a comment on the site. if you enter wrong password there is not link to register. Even worse, you have to restart the entire session to get it back.

a search for "lvm" turns up no results, which is a little odd, considering that there are articles tagged with the term, and this site is actually a good resource about the tools. Is there something about case sensitivity maybe? should the tags themselves be indexed? I'd think that if there were tags matching the search term exactly the associated articles should show up in the result.

I see many results for "lvm" - perhaps you too were searching mid-index?

I also get the same results as dkg when using the "Quick Site Search" box in the right navbar. "lvm" produces no results, and "xen" produces just one.

There are two search engines: The quick site search is the old one. It doesn't work very well, which explains a lack of results.

The new one under discussion located here gives *lots* of results for LVM. I hope that is clearer?

I'm happy with the new engine and will shortly switch over to using it for all searchs - it just needs some editing of the templates.

Ah. Sorry Steve. I understand now. I tested the new system and it doesn't seem to work very well and produces lots of results. Would love to see if implemented in the main search and in the quick search.
