Weblog entry #27 for Steve

Linux / Unix Administration?

I'm wondering if a less tightly focussed site would be interesting?

  • Linux Administration.
  • Unix Administration.

The code used here is simple to setup multiple instances with. The only downside is that I'd expect few people to contribute; and I haven't the time to write for two different audiences...

Somebody wanna volunteer? ;)

I think you'll find that a lot of non Debian specific stuff goes on here anyway...!

You would think thay by now there would already be a Unix and/or Linux administration site like this one.

That is probably a fair comment, although I do try to keep Debian in mind whenever I'm writing anything and like to think I'm doing a good job of that because I mention apt-get almost constantly ;)

Still you'd be amazed at the number of times people will submit a question on how to fix a broken RPM, or configure Yast for SuSE Linux. I kinda feel bad when that happens, but I'm concious of the fact that there are "other places" to go for non-stop question posting.

I've seen a few good websites for general Unix administration, but all of them seem to be either very small, or very focussed.

Right now I'm loving UnixTips.org - but that falls into the "small" catagory.

(Having said that I guess this site is also small...)

There are other sites I like such as Sysadmin mag but I tend not to visit them very often. Perhaps less often than I should.

don't build another sites like this... :)

IMHO, there's lot of sites about general linux/unix. d-a.o is popular because debian lacked _active_ site like this (again, IMHO. both planet & help are more or less dead...).

this site has debian word in name. keep it about debian, it is great. more focused articles on debian are, better. other distributions do have their own sites, forums (or should). I think scanning posted questions for suse, yast & rpm and suggesting more appropriate site might be better. if user wants to ask here even after you notification that it is less likely to find suse expert here than on link you suggest, let it go through; someone might pop up. just keep main focus on debian...

of course, if you are ambitious and willing to support suse-administration.org, go ahead :)

Thanks for the nice comments.

I think the thing that really triggered this is the large number of recently rejected pieces...

I feel bad when I say "sorry, not appropriate", and my thoughts were along the lines of "Hmmm if it wasn't just Debian then I'd be able to post it ... that's a good idea right?".

As things stand I've had a lot of useful contributions from readers - but not enough to mean that I can stop writing myself. And whilst I enjoy writing :

  • I don't particularly think I do a good job of it.
  • It takes a lot of time away from things I'd rather do.
  • I'm almost running out of things to cover myself - given that I cannot cover things I don't know about.

I think you're right about Debian Planet being "dead". I look at it every now and again and I'm disappointed when the front-page hasn't seen any updates.

DebianHelp appears to have an active forum, although I have to filter out the political pieces. Whilst politics does have an impact on many people's lives I find the mix of Debian + Politics (USA-Centric politics which largely don't affect me) a bad one.

I look after a few SuSE machines, but I can't say that I'm thrilled by them .. ;)

I guess I'll leave it there, but if anybody else wants to run a new site I think it would be interesting .. I'm almost at a point where I have good documentation on this CMS too..

just some random thoughts you probably thought of as well...: many moderated usenet groups and/or mailing lists have preformatted one or more polite rejections, sent along with message from the moderator. may be it would be good to have few, with pointer to general rules about content which should apear here. submiter would read it and compare his work against guidelines, possibly focusing his article more on debian or if it is non-debian question, asking at more appropriate place...

I've already got some minimal guidelines which I hope people read before they post things. (It is linked to on the create article page fairly clearly along with a small reminder.

However they could probably be improved.

I do tend to reply to people when they send something that isn't appropriate, altough there are occaisions when I'm just too busy.
