Weblog entry #35 for Steve

Logo contest?

Does anybody feel like designing a logo for the planet / this site?

I'm tempted to hold a contest ..

Prizes? Paypal transfer of token amount of money / free slashdot subscriber account / a year of paid livejournal account time / something else?

Hmmm *ponders*

Update: OK prizes are almost certainly a bad idea...

I'd stay well clear of prizes that are worth money, offering a prize for a logo makes it seem that the articles and comments contributed to d-a.org are not worth money.
(The sentence is more harsh than intended, but you see what I mean.)
So what else? Not sure. Will have a think.

I guess you're right. It just seems like logos are often overlooked and people don't get the credit they deserve for them - so a prize is a simple way of redressing the balance.

Sounds fun! I will give it a try :)

Do you have some requirements? Of can I design freely?

No special requirements. I guess the obvious limit is "mustn't be too big", and if it could look "Debian-ish" that'd be a nice bonus.

Size-wise I was thinking of something comparible to the logo on Debian Planet - but I don't know if that would be useful as a site logo here too..

What do you think about this one?

It's a quick draw in InkScape. Used the Debian logo and the planet H3 title background color.

I can change every thing around. We can loose the penguin and do something with the logo.

Becouse it's an InkScape drawing, I kan change the size eazy.Logo Work in progress: http://www.thenetwork.nl/Tux-Fly-Debian.png

It looks nice :)

One problem is that if it's resized the 'A" in administration looks particularly jagged - but I think that's a result of my working with the .PNG output file, rather than the source file(s).

I've installed it for the next 30 minutes - until the planet gets rebuilt if you'd like to take a look:

I'm utterly uncreative, so if you have better ideas then feel free to experiment - I'm not obsessed with penguins, so if you want to looe it I wouldn't be too upset...

Yes, I see the problem. I shall change it. Now I know that the with of the image is 200 and the heigt is 190 :)

It's smaller now. Try this one:

I think it will be better.

That looks very nice!

I'm a little confused by the two 'spring' lines at the foot of the penguin though, I think it might look less distracting if they weren't present...

Hi,

I removed the 'spring' lines. I also made a version with a planet :)

Look at those:

That's quite a cool logo.

(but it will be interesting to see what others come up with too.)

I like, although I prefer the previous one, I think that I'm going to keep that for the planet - and now I'll wait and see if there are any submissions for "site logo".

Your design could easily be adopted for that, just by removing the word "planet", if you were interested.

(I've searched the database and I see no non-anoynmous comments from your IP address .. so I can't help you recover your username/password. If you can remember the email address you used to register then you can use the forgotten password page to recover your details).

Steve, I could remove the "planet" if you want. I had thought about that too, but the resulting logo would drown in the website due to the vibrant theme employed.

Unfortunately I never commented after registering. I will dig into my emails/accounts to see if I find the documentation when I registered.

Half the reason for wanting a logo for the site itself, (rather than the planet), is as a means of prompting me to redign the templates!

So I'd not be too concerned about the current vibrant colours .. If there are colours in the future design they will be either monochrom or Debian-esque red.

(Although I'm assuming that the logo you linked to has a transparent background - so it could sit happily at the far right of the topmost red-band we currently have)

I'm getting more practised at using CSS for layout purposes so hopefully I can drop all the tables used for layout. But it is sadly a pretty big job.

Sample placement:

(The quality of that image isn't great - but it doesn't look too bad "for real".)

That is just not going to fit in. How about changing the red logo to white?

On my home desktop system it does appear to stand out fairly well to me! But I think that white would obviously be more clear.

I think it will ultimately depend on what colour(s) the final site layout ends up using.

I'm leaning towards a pure black+white layout, but I know that if I don't use "Debian Red" that somebody is bound to complain ... :S

I like the plain white one, and have inserted it into a simple mockup of what I'm planning for the new site.

This is just a quick hack, but if you're curious I'm looking for something like this:

I need to decide whether I want the header + footer to spread across the whole page, or be bound by the two columns. But otherwise that's kinda how I imagined it.

(I will div everything to allow easy styling by people who are capable of being more creative than I!)

A little blue would be wonderful as it will tone down the "debian red"s on the website.

Where do you suggest putting it?

(For what its worth I agree that it is looking a little redder than I'd expected..)

Too small!

I've started a new entry for CSS-based discussions, that might help for the moment!

Right now I'm experimenting with different options for the article display. And strangely enough I'm kinda enjoying it which is unusual for me ..

Yes, it is transparent. Inkscape made it like this by default ;)

Tables for layout, now that is way too old. Let me know if you need help in moving away from table based layouts. I know a bit of CSS (have done simple stuff like changing u.p.d.o to be different than p.d.o, and giving hendrix a mozilla like look.)

Thanks for the offer!

Right now the plan is to layout a new site, then post it for comment - e.g. beta.debian-administration.org. Hopefully that way people will let me know if things are broken.

The last time I tried to switch I just ran into too many problems with CSS + Internet Explorer (something I don't use, so I couldn't test against it.)

Hey, sorry I'm late, I just noticed the contest. If possible, I'd like to submit an entry. Inkscape/SVG-based, final touches in the GIMP. I can provide different sized versions, and can also provide one with "Debian" in white, for darker backgrounds (looks better, really, but needs black text for a white background).

http://adam.nipl.net/dot/debian-admin-planet-dot.01.png

If you're interested, drop me an e-mail, in case I forget to check back here. :) adam@alphapapa.net

I can also provide the source files to anyone who wants them to fiddle with or re-release; I consider it GPL'ed.

Here's one more variation, it's sort of cute in a way...don't know if that's a good thing or not. :)
