Weblog entry #36 for Steve
This site will shortly be making the transition to a CSS-based layout.
This will:
- Make things more flexiable.
- Potentially allow users to override the look and feel.
- Make the site one of the cool kids, like /.
- Make my head hurt more when it comes to layout tweaks..
Shortly I'll announce a beta URL where people can test and comment upon the way the site looks / feels / behaves.
Anybody using the CVS repository will see the updates happen, as they occur.

One of the things that has been due an overhaul for a while has been the comment displaying code - ideally I'll update that at the point the site is finished.
(Thanks for pointing out the bad link; I've fixed it now, even though it's kinda redundant.)

The CMS is called Yawns, and was originally written by Denny De La Haye, as described in the FAQ.
The code has been modified a lot by me - and if you're interested there are some documentation available, as well as a CVS repository. The timeline shows how much I work on the code!
There were some areas of the site that I was initially unhappy with, but I've been gradually fixing them over time... and now I don't have any major complaints :)

Thew new site uses more definite colour changes, so it's harder (at least for me) to read.
The current d-a.org design is also recognisable. How about switching to CSS without changing the design, a-la-Slashdot?

Is it genuinely harder to read, or is that partly because it doesn't look like you expect it to?
I'm open to the idea of changing the colours, or making it easier to read if I have a good idea of what would actually help...

I still prefer the old site though :/

I've changed the dark text to be white for the moment, which stands out a lot more.
I much much prefer the new one - if only to avoid the "orange" links in the sidebar, and to make the colours more .. monochrome.

It would be great if I could choose to permanently use the old style though.
A few of my friends each have websites, and I'd say 80% of the work they do on them is redesigns. "Work on the content!" I say. Doesn't apply here though, we get both!
The current d-a.org site is quite popular, according to Alexa (http://www.alexa.com/data/details/?url=www.debian-administration. org). When I come to d-a.org it's immediately recognisable as being d-a.org, and I like that.
A good way to test which layout is better would be to ignore what everyone is saying, and give them two choices when they first visit the site:
* Use style1 [preview]
* Use style2 [preview]
Randomise the order, and make it as simple to switch.
