Weblog entry #54 for Steve

Ugh

Tags: none.

After deleting two more comments today I figure it is about time that I wrote comment guidelines / statements.

I figure it should say something like your comment may be deleted if it violates any of these rules:

  • No personal attacks.
  • No excessive profanity.
  • No plaguerised content.

Anything else?

It sucks when you have to start doing this kind of thing. Still only to be expected I guess

yes, this afternoon i viewed one comment especially "out of content" and i thought "arf! not good...."
I hope these practices will not become too common and the spirit of this website (and of debian) will remain.

good job, Steve.

I've just deleted a bunch more, which is a pain.

I'll update the code to try to handle things a bit more gracefully, but it isn't going to be easy.

Perhaps you should also say something along the lines of "anything that breaks the law in the country where the server is located will be removed".

As a site gets more popular you will get more tolls and random idiots... If you get really popular start to expect lots of link-spam too.

I don't see the point - why make rules for people that don't follow them?
I say don't feed the trolls, just ignore them, and let the comments be deleted without a reaction. If necessary, allow reporting of offensive posts.

I agree you shouldn't feed the trolls, you should silently delete them.

However just to cover your own arse you should probably have a clear statment of what you will accept and what will happen to unacceptable content.

Pretty much agreed.

I certainly don't assume that by writing any guidelines that bad behaviour would be discouraged - but it does give an explaination, and shows what kind of content isn't acceptible.

Have a look at http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/BuildingCommunitieswithSo. html
There are some good ideas. I do not know how much stuff gets deleted there,
but the community is normaly clean.

Oh? When adding a link in textmode a space was placed between So. and html. Here is the link again :

Thanks for the nice link, there is a lot of good detail there.

(Space(s) are added to long unbroken text to avoid comments being able to 'widen' pages. I had thought I'd left links alone, I shall investiage.)
