Weblog entry #55 for Steve

Diggg.....

It looks like a Spanish clone of Digg.com has released their source code.

I've not investigated it yet - but with the current plethora of Debian-related community sites it might be useful to somebody ;)

I'm almost tempted myself. If there was a use for it I could imagine it would be simple to run. (Given that story promotion, etc, is largely hands-free).

Of course I thought the same about setting up this site ...

Well, if you're willing and need a hand... :-)

It is tempting, but the last thing I want to do is create a new site and further split/sub-site the Debian audience...

I hear ya. But it would be interesting to see what "the community" diggs. In that sense it could bring some of this mess together and/or thin the herd a bit?

True I guess. A bit hard to know how useful things are before you start them too ... which is a pain!

I'll look into setting up a test installation over the weekend - I'll need to modify the code to authenticate against the current user table at least.

If you want to experiment yourself let me know how it goes.

I'll see what I can do, but the next week to 10 days isn't looking all that promising for playtime.

Yes starting is the hardest part, and rm -rf ./* is the easiest!

Installation is reasonably simple, and figuring out how it works is pretty simple too.

The key to understanding it was realising you need to load http://foo/libs/promote-example.php' to actually change the state of stories from 'queued' to 'published'. (I have no idea what the other example file 'karma-example.php' is for.)

But converting the text is going to be a large job as many of the messages are all hardcoded in Spanish. Some are simple to change, others I cannot understand, even from reading the code...

Better you than me then. My knowledge of Spanish is limited to Taco Bell orders!

i speak spanish fluently(1), so if you need help, ask. I don't know if i could find a lot of time during the next weeks, because of holidays/xmas/end of year-party, and i'll be offline most of the time.... but i'm ok to try, and i can make the job on a laptop.

(1) much better than english ! ;-)

Thanks for the offer!

I'm not really too sure how to proceed. The software is PHP and there are literally dozens of hardcoded strings inside the pages - so extracting them out into a list is hard.

If you had the time, and interest, you can download the tarball from here:

Have a look over it and see if you think you'd have the patience to update all the text in the .php files - if you do it is probably simplest just to do that and then mail me the updated file.

If it is too big a job, or you're too busy, then feel free to say so.

Oh dear!

Yet another site to be added to the links and watch-list then, I guess.

A name like Debian-Administration-Central-Planet-News.org one might fear :-)

Looks interesting, though.

Well, as for me I would just be glad to have a planet listing "Planet Debian", "Planet Debian Upstream", "Planet Debian Administration" and a few other blogs of Debian people that aren't in any of those... (As my blog, which I thought of adding to Planet Debian Administration before I've realized that to be on this planet I had to have my blog here...)

It would be very simple to setup an Uber-Debian-planet for Debian related blogs, containing the stuff here, on Planet Debian and Planet Debian Upstream.

The PlanetPlanet software is easy to install and use, and all the planet sites provide a feed you could import.

Planet Noori agregates Planet Debian, Planet Debian Administration and Planet Debian Upstream, along with some other RSS feeds...
