Weblog entry #64 for Steve

Website updates

Tags: none.

Some of the site updates previously mentioned are now starting to be implemented.

Nothing too major so far, just a couple of minor tweaks:

Recent Weblog Changes

I believe the comment made when I displayed the site to my critical friend was "Why are these usernames listed? [and why should I care?]".

To address this the weblog entries have been updated to show the title of the post - to make it clear what they are. The comment count is now written in plain English too. (Rather than being a mere number in brackets with no obvious meaning.)

Inappropriate weblog titles will cause the blog entry to be removed from the site. Right now that will require manual intervention, but shortly there will be a button to report such entries.

Advertise, pimp, whatever as much as you like. Use bad words and get hidden from view.

Article Tags

There is now the possability to "tag" articles, to aid searching, etc.

Currently I've added some relevant tags to some articles. Once more testing has been applied users can add tags as they see fit. (For example all articles tagged "xen".)

(Pretty much the same as before; use whatever tags you like. Bad ones will be ignored, and your input will no longer be desired.)

That is all for now, but more updates coming soon.

There aren't any "scary", or significant changes to come. So chances are if you like the site as-is then you'll contine to do so. They are just tweaks to make it more usable for newcomers, and less of a maze.

Any suggestions are welcome - especially if you have experience in usability and other such new-fangled things!

I'd noticed the "meaningless name" thing, and am grateful it is improved. Although the blog subject fonts don't look pretty on my desktop, a tad too small for my eyes being the main issue, but they look like they are in bold as well.

"No title" isn't a good choice either, you sure you are filtering meaningless titles?

Are we getting a bit left sided, as my left column is now two screenfuls, and my right only a third of a screen, or is that just my options.

It is all brilliant... I think a big plus for the Debian project.

Also the weblog titles don't have a "hover" attribute, some people won't click on them as a result. Surely they should turn "red" for consistency?

I've corrected that too now. Funny how I didn't even do it deliberately, or notice!

Yes the fonts are in bold. Really the choice was to make the text small to avoid it wrapping a lot, then bolded to make it actually legiable.

I'll remove the bold and make them slightly bigger, that should help it work out.

As for the 'no title' you're probably right. I just noticed before going to sleep last night that an entry with not title couldn't be linked/clicked so I figured I should do something about it.

I guess I have two choices:

  • Don't include entries with no title.
  • Change the 'no title' to something else.

The left-sidedness is something that should be addresses shortly. I'm hoping to get the time to reorganise a couple of the sections (and remove the random section too) to make things more balanced and obvious.

The Weblogs entries are unreadable to me. :-( Have you ever read Dogma W4 or other similar resource? Make the text a bit bigger please, my eyes really hurts. :-(
But, notice that except the font-size, I love this new "design" very much. It looks pretty cool! :-)

I have noticed the 'tags' apparition. It's a good thing. 2 questions about it:
  • are articles tagging limited to authors or everyone can do it? (i don't ask that because of a preference...)
  • is there already a way to search in tags or is it in progress?
thanks.

  • Ultimately all registered users may tag the articles. Right now only I can add them, whilst I work out the kinks and make sure things are good.
  • You can see all currently used tags in one page. That doesn't look very pretty, so I'm still planning how to make it sexier.
  • Tag searching will be added to the Search page once the Tags are fully live - as that is a simple thing to do.

(I've been testing a small Ajax inline-tagging system - there is a really simple one-page demo available - although it might be removed in the near future. I've had some useful feedback, and need to update it so that the 'Add New Tag' text stays present and new tags are inserted into the list correctly..)
