Finally I decided to give the new eye candy a try. Turns out it is really easy, just follow http://wiki.debian.org/Compiz and after 5 minutes you can enjoy all the cool transparency stuff :) ( that is, it's 5 minutes if you already have a supported video card and Xorg 7.1 )

Cool! But is it worth it...?

I wanted to find out .. but when I run "compwiz --replace" my window manager disappears and I have to restart X with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.

I guess a new window-manager should be spawned .. but that fails for no obvious reason.

I shall have to go without teh pretty!

I had the same result as Steve..

I've got Compiz to work on other distros before.. mind you I didn't take a close look at the errors. Some sort of complaints about DRI modules etc, but I already had DRI commented out in the xorg.conf so I don't know what the problem is.

If I find a solution I'll let you know.

Even Ubuntu doesn't have compiz/xgl integrated properly yet - other distros like Mandriva/SLED have caught onto the craze and set up 'click of a button' xgl enabling.

I'd say it's all 'eye candy' but I've heard there are some hardware benefits from having your desktop drawn off-screen.. not sure about that though

Isn't that simply due to the fact that Debian doesn't have it "integrated properly" yet? :-) Just kidding...

No, it's not worth it :) Probably soon I'll grow tired of it and I'll switch back to the 'normal' setup.

Moreover, I've just experienced an X-server freeze... I guess I'll give it another look when compiz-like features are integrated directly into Nautilus.

Hey, I got AIGLX going, but with Beryl instead of Compiz, which is a lot cleaner in my opinion.

Here is my Howto
