Question to Steve

I am running Debian as my desktop since Potato was released; I could write some tutorials on desktop usage ( for example, how to encode a/v streams to be able to view them on your Nokia cell phone, on your iPod running iPodLinux; how to communicate with said devices through IRDA/Bluetooth networking; how to set up LIRC and be able to control XMMS / Mplayer with a standard TV remote; rip audio CDs, etc etc )

The question though is: do desktop usage tutorials belong to Debian Administration site?

Six months ago I would have said no.

But today? I'd say yes.

There are a lot of beginners of all kinds coming here, and it seems clear from the comments that desktop-type articles are useful.

If there is any doubt we can just pretend we're administering Debian Desktops company-wide ;)

Steve

What I am looking for is the Debian way of doing things. I am interested in best practices using Debian tools and packages. In any area.

Sure I can understand people needing to use the source package and it is cool to read about system admins solving problems that way. But they should try to give their reason why they did not use the package. But in most cases the deb packages will do just fine. Often if I miss a functionality I can wait until it arrives in sid. I am just a hobby Sysadmin, and no company wide data is depending on my installations :)

That's a problem... I am no professional administrator; everything I could write about is more my personal experience solving some problems I encountered trying to run a Debian system as a desktop. I am afraid most of it is going to be more 'Gentooish' in spirit rather than 'Debianish'

Try to write something and we will see. Be strict and precise when writing (good sense of humour counts too). Try to imagine that nobody knows everything, so keep in mind not to forget to include all apropriate information on the topic. I think that good article, even on such topic as making video or whatever you know to write about, will be good enough to be published here and will have it's readers.

i'd be interested in this article, particularly if it talks about the hardware choices too. Any chance of you writing it?
