Wobbly Windows on Lenny

Yesterday while waiting for a SAP transaction to run at work I decided to try and see if there is a reason why Compiz doesn't work in Lenny with KDE out of the box. I had a look on the Debian Bug Tracker site, which led to a blog entry. In the blog entry was a suggestion on how to update gconf (previously suggested). I gave it a try and now everything works!

* http://packages.debian.org/lenny/compiz-kde
* http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?pkg=compiz-kde;dist=unstable
* http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=390929
* http://bgoglin.livejournal.com/11253.html

Although someone had already suggested gconf configuration it wasn't something I knew how to do and it wasn't important enough for me to dig any further at the time.

Now it's all working, windows are a wobblin' and the desktop is a cube! Actually it's mostly silly eye-candy but there are a few useful things in there, and it does seem to reduce CPU load.

How does it seem to reduce CPU load? Compiz is pure eye-candy, which surely is going to use more CPU load than it's ever going to save. Unless of course you're too busy playing with the shiny interface to actually bother doing any work...

The theory is that it offloads quite a bit of work from xorg on the CPU on to Compiz which uses the GPU instead.

With compiz running my low-spec system is able to do more things more easily without xorg spiking on the CPU. It's not very scientific but it does feel more responsive than with Compiz running.
