Weblog entry #113 for ajt

Splashy eye candy

This week I've been on an eye-candy trip with my desktop Lenny system.

First off I tried Compiz/KDE which works but it is not stable yet. Running any other full screen OpenGL application or game tends to cause it to lock up when the application ends. Additionally it periodically fails in interesting and varied ways. Debugging it, is going to be a pain, as there are so many variables but it's only an optional feature at the moment so it's not interfering in my normal desktop productivity.

The second piece of eye-candy is the Debian hosted Spashy application. It's a userland replacement for bootsplash and as it doesn't need any kernel tweaking is easier to get along with. I've manually installed the sid package on my Lenny system and I've automatically installed it on my sid system both boxes work fine. It's trivial and pointless but it's fun and doesn't seem to hurt. I've even submitted it as a Deb-a-day package, but as it's only in sid yet and it's apparently not 100% stable yet it is being held back until things settle.

Splashy is not in the official Debian Etch repositories, though it may make it into an Etch backport eventually.

At the moment it is only in sid though you can install the sid Splashy packages on a Lenny system without a problem as I did.

You can download both deb and rpm packages from the Splashy site and install either manually on most systems and you can compile from source should the mood take you.

I believe the shiny new Gusty Ubuntu has an official Splashy deb available and as with Debian it is possible to install this on an older Ubuntu release.

For more details see the Splahsy installation page:
