Weblog entry #128 for ajt

NFSv4

At the weekend I started to set my new server up at home.

I thought I'd give NFSv4 a try, it seems to be the "new thing". So far it seems to work okay, better than the NFS3 user-space server of the Sarge era.

What I need to do next is getting Kerberos support running... It's all behind a firewall/router so I don't need security per se, but it's fun to learn how it's done.

I may even write it up! So far NFSv4 is working fine without Kerberos running. I've installed Kerberos 5 on the server and got a client system to authenticate a user happily against it okay.

The next step is to try turning NFS on with Kerberos running, I may even give trying out telnet-krb ago - though to be honest I'm perfectly happy with SSH...

I may even write it up!

Please do! I'm umming and arring between NFSv4 and AFS for some work projects, and I'm gathering howtos and write-ups about both, and this site is always one of the first places I go looking for hints, tips, and walk-throughs.

I've also been wondering if it'd be worth jumping in with both feet and seeing if I can use something like GFS backed by an iSCSI SAN volume, but that's not mutually exclusive to either of the above network FS's, just another option at a different layer.

All I have to do now is find the time to test all this stuff out...

Cheers.
