Weblog entry #145 for ajt
For some strange reason Microsoft sent me an email to download a free "Microsoft 20-minute guide to IT" document. For a laugh I had a look. It's a bland Microsoft sort of document that says nothing, waffles a bit, and doesn't mention that a lot of the things they are trying to sell are either rubbish or there are free alternatives (well they wouldn't would they?).
I had a look at how the document was constructed and it was done with Adobe InDesign CS3 on a Macintosh. If Microsoft's office tools are so good why didn't they use them to produce their own document...?

That looks like it!
For my sins I was once a member of Microsoft's Software Developer Network/Site Builder Network. I never got anything useful from Microsoft other than a logo to put on a web page - which I have long since thrown away. I never got an email from them, discounts or anything to make me want to use Microsoft products. Then suddenly I got an invite to go to their UK headquarters for the Vista launch (which I declined) and since then I've received a stream of emails from them and I can't seem to get them to stop.
It's all so amateur and disorganised I sort of let them send me emails just so I can laugh at them... Even the 20 minute guide was funny, it wouldn't open with the works version of Acrobat on my XP box, but kpdf on Linux was perfectly happy to read it!
