Weblog entry #152 for ajt
Today I was forced to use a vanilla Windows XP system. It was most painful, it looked like it was designed for four year olds, IE6 is utterly dreadful - what are all the advert about? and where are the tabs? I was setting up a web server only to discover that I need to run it under a user account and seriously arse about with it to allow the web server to read files on a network drive.
If I had been able to do use a Linux box I would not have needed to do all the messing about and it would have taken me half the time and would be easier to maintain going forwards. So much for maximising "share holder value", if you ask me, Microsoft is good at maximising their shareholder value but not the poor companies that buy their tat.
By the way, I'm a person not a PC and I run Linux on my PC not some piece of dog poo.

Nonetheless, I'm not so negative about Outlook, at least from a user's perspective. It's configuration is richer, although more chaotic, than e.g. Evolution. Ironically, being powerful but difficult to set up has always been the peculiarity of Linux wrt Windows.

Outlook is perhaps the one product I'd single out from Microsoft for a special place in hell. It's strange, non standard, slow, unreliable, primitive and one of the biggest conduits for viruses there is. Email clients that are like it are just as evil...
I've found no perfect email client, just less hateful ones. However if you like Outlook you are welcome to my lifetime supply.

A basic function, that is ideal for sending SPAM off to be retrained, yet missing unless you install extra software.
