Weblog entry #163 for ajt
I'm no advocate of terror or violence but I'm getting pretty sick of how HM Government is getting desperate to drum up fear to justify their continued attacks on civil liberties. If you haven't see it there is a nice Billboard generator where you can make up your own more truthful message then post it to flickr. Some of them are clever and make fair comments...

I believe the original billboards are part of an official advertising/scare campaign by the Metropolitan Police Service (London)...
It is sad to see tactics used by Fascist governments used in an allegedly moderate democracy.
The problems with this kind of nonsense is that it generates a tidal wave of false positives that overloads the serious work of actually finding and preventing nutters. Real security work is slow, silent and careful, this is just cheap fast publicity that props up unacceptable intrusions into private life.

Even if a democratic system is less worse than a totalitarist or authoritarian one, that doesn't mean it is "good"...

I believe that Churchill once said that:
It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried.
and:
The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.
