Weblog entry #165 for ajt

Squeeze chaos

I let my Squeeze box safe-upgrade over the weekend. Lots of things broke. The hal upgrade was messy, Splashy needs removing before it goes in properly. Udev is now renaming eth0 to eth1, if I manually remove then reinsert the skge module into the kernel it creates it as eth0 correctly... Finally all the sound modules stopped loading and need modprobing for manually.

If I can figure out which package is responsible I'll file a bug report.

I only have problems with the sound, the new pulseaudio is not working great for me :/
Other than that, I didn't noticed major changes

That's what testing is for, isn't?

It's our duty to report bugs and help Debian to be the greatest distro ever and achieve the 'Conquer The World Goal'. ;)

I didn't experience that ethX thing but the mess between qt3 and qt4 is quite remarkable.

The sound weird behaviour and broken nepomuk and strigi deserve a mention as well.

It is to test things, however that relies on you knowing which package has broken the system, and when you identify it reporting a bug. Sometimes it's harder said than done... I do report bugs and follow bug reports to see what is going on and to try to help but I don't know hoe effective I am.

The ethX rename is a pain. I don't know what triggers it, but it clearly brings up eth0 on boot only to rename it to eth1. When I remove the driver and reinsert it into the kernel, udev puts it back in the correct location and doesn't try to rename it.

I've fixed my sound card by manually adding the modules to the /etc/modules file - which doesn't seem right but it's working so I'm not too unhappy with it at the moment.

My Squeeze box is still running KDE3, my SID virtual system has gone to KDE4 though. The change to KDE4 on the SID box went quite well for me, better than the early adopters found...
